Morning came early in the Bongiovi household and Jon was still an early
riser. Ellie was sound asleep and he was going to let her sleep seeing that
last night was rough for her. It took her forever to fall asleep, ever since
she was in her teens she could never fall asleep before three or four a.m. in
the morning and it had stayed that way til today. But it worked out being a
rock star’s wife seeing the hours he worked. Plus being in pain didn’t help. It
took Jon about an hour to get her to admit that she was but once she did they
were both able to settle down because he was driving her nuts.
Jon went downstairs to make his coffee and as he waited he wondered
why, why his wife was chosen to suffer like this. She saw it another way but he
didn’t. He was angry. Their children were angry. She thought that she raised
them better but she understood and that they had a right to how they felt as
did Jon. She remembered how she felt when her parents went thru the same thing
as she had different feelings for each of them. Her Father had Alzheimer’s for
years which was very hard on the family but what really got him was he was diagnosed
with Lung Cancer and he only lasted five months after he was diagnosed with it.
They all knew what to expect with Daddy but it still hurt when it happened.
Then with Mom, Oh Mommy she had so much after Daddy passed. She almost passed
to the day after a month when Daddy passed but their sister hid Mom’s DNR so
when she went into Cardiac Arrest they brought her back when they shouldn’t
have. So she didn’t live the life she should have for those three years not the
quality of life she should have had. Double bypass surgery, then they had to
amputate her right leg from the knee down because of bad circulation. Boy was
she mad. Plus she had Dementia in the end and my brother-in-law and her sister I
believe were ripping her off and maybe not taking that great care of her. Those
years were not good for her at all and Jon was on the road and plus he had his
knee surgery also and Richie went into rehab for the last time that year. Two
years before he left the band.
Jon was just about to throw his cup when he heard someone walk in. “Hey
Dad you’re up early?” Jimmy asked his Dad.
Jon turned around and looked at his oldest son. “Hey Jim so are you.
Want some coffee?”
“Would love some even thou you made it?” Jimmy laughed.
“Smartass.” Jon laughed.
“Um when I walked in you looked like you were off somewhere far. You
ok?” Jim asked his Dad.
Pouring two cups and handing one to Jimmy he looked at him and sighed.
“I’m fine, I was just thinking why, why
your Mom that’s all. I mean is this my punishment for not being around in the
early days?” he told his son sadly. Jimmy looked at his Dad solemnly. “Look Dad, You and Mom explained to
me what happened in those days and it wasn’t either of your faults. And I
really tried not to be mad at Nonni but boy was it hard not to. To be honest I
don’t know if I could have been able to forgive her like Mom did. But like Mom
she was raised to forgive and she passed that on to us. And growing up I always
knew how much she loved you.” He told his Dad smiling.
Taking a sip of his coffee and remembering that time, he looked at his
son, “She is something that’s for sure. But there were times she wanted to run.
But if I didn’t run into her that day we were looking for material because
Spanky wanted Richie and I to go with her, I wouldn’t have never seen her
again. It was just by sheer chance. Your Grandpa Paul said it was fate. Maybe
he was right.” Jon said shaking his head.
“Well Mom thought so. But she did tell me that she nearly died when I
came running downstairs while you were at the door. She wasn’t quite ready to
tell you that you were a Father yet, then here I come running yelling “Mommy”
and jumping in her arms while you’re standing there with your mouth open
counting the years and months she said.” Jimmy told him laughing.
“Hey I was what Twenty-two, Twenty-three something like that and out
you came looking like me at that age. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to
figure out that you were mine. Plus her eyes were wide and she was nervous as
hell. To tell you the truth she was so cute in trying to tell me but I was in
shock so. But I knew what I wanted to do right from the start. Grab the two of
you and run like hell.” He said smiling.
“So you had no qualms about being a Dad or husband?” he asked his Dad.
Looking his son straight in the eye, “No I didn’t. As long as it was
with your Mom and you No.” he told him honestly.
“Well now I know why you were the favorite in-law with Grandma and
Grandpa.” Jimmy laughed.
“Well at first they weren’t happy with me because your Mother got
involved with this smartass seventeen-year-old in the first place. Especially
who liked rock and roll and wanted to make a name for himself and had long hair
from the first time they met me. Then they found out I knocked their daughter
up. And wouldn’t return any of her letters or phone calls which means I didn’t
want anything to do with the baby. Then my Mother gets involved. They don’t
hear from me for years and one day I just show up out of the blue with longer
hair and I’m wearing earrings and shit. Oh and I have this rock band and we’re
just starting to make it which means groupies. Your Grandparents weren’t
stupid. So I had to work for their respect. Luckily I showed them how much I
loved her and you.” Jon explained to his son.
Jimmy smiled as Jon continued, “Just do your Mother and me a favor after
were gone, don’t let the family drift apart ok?
She doesn’t want what happen to her and her siblings to happen to you
guys because you’re the oldest so keep them in check.” Jon told him.
“Don’t worry Dad I’ll make sure we stay together. I know how sad she is
that everyone drifted apart over the years and how she blamed the in-laws for
it. But she’s right they are a piece of work.” Jimmy agreed with his Mom as his
Dad nodded.

After finishing his coffee and talking with his son, Jon made Ellie’s
tea and went back upstairs with it to see if she was awake. When he walked into
the bedroom she wasn’t in their bed. He walked over to the nightstand and put
her tea down and looked to make sure she wasn’t out on the patio but the doors
were locked from the inside. She sometimes liked to sit out there and just look
out over the back yard early in the morning. But then he heard a noise coming
from the bathroom and the door open as she stepped out.
“Oh Hi Honey. What were you downstairs in the kitchen or your office?”
she asked him as she went over and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
“Hey is that all I get?” he asked her with a sad face.
“Oh for crying out loud. Your worse than the kids.” She giggled. “Well
come here if you want it properly Baby.” And he did and he still had that
swagger when he wanted it. He took her in his arms and gave her a kiss she soon
wouldn’t forget. She swooned in his arms as she giggled again. “You know how
much I love you Honey?” she told him smiling.
Smiling back at her, “Yeah I have some idea Babe.”
“Good I wouldn’t want you to forget.” She smiled when she saw him with
a solemn face all of a sudden. She knew what that meant. “Hey stop that you know what I mean. Look
everyone is going to be saying things like this and I don’t want everyone being
sad over it. Honey your life ends at sometime and you know one of us was going
to go first it just happened to be me first. I’m sorry I know you wanted to be
the one and believe me for the kids I would change things only because you are
going to drive them up a wall.” She told him giggling again.
Jon just looked at her in surprised. “HEY! I will not.” Then thinking
about it for a second, “Well ok I’ll try not too but that’s all I can promise.”
he said as he kissed her on the side of her temple.
“Well that sucked.” She told him looking at him a little disappointed.
“Excuse me? What sucked?” he asked her a little confuse as he let go of
her.
Walking over to the chair next to the bed she took her tea and had a
sip. Then said to him, “Well that kiss. You give me a little peck on my temple
when a minute ago you laid a bomb of a one on me. Please.” She said almost
disgusted with him.
“We’re arguing over a kiss.” He said back to her loudly.
“There it is. You’re mad. You’re mad at me because I started to talk
about IT.” She told me sipping her tea again.
Shaking his head, he thought she was crazy. “I’m not mad. I’m not
upset. I just wanted to bring my beautiful wife her fucking tea! Is that
alright!” he said nearly yelling.
Smiling, “Yes that’s fine but Jon we’re going to have to talk about
this soon because I hate to tell you this I called our lawyer and he needs you
to sign some papers for me because he and I, well we made my final wishes but
because your my beneficiary and you also need to sign on the dotted line.” She
finally told him as he stood there speechless for a few minutes. So she just
sat there finishing her tea as he got himself together.
Once he realized what she said he finally came around. “You did what
with our what?” he asked still a little dazed.
Looking up to him she told him again, “I did what you couldn’t. Sweetie
don’t get mad but one of us had to be the grown up and get things in order and
not wait til the last moment. Even Brett agreed with me. He told me if we left
things after I died things would get tied up in probate, and you don’t want
that. So I took care of it for the both of us.” She told him as she crinkled
her face.
Jon walked over to her and sat on the edge of their bed. “Do you have
to say died.” He asked her.
“She bent over to take his hand. “Look I know this is the hardest on
you my Love, but we need to take care of these things now I don’t want to wait
until things are too late and everyone is fighting over them. Everything should
be spelled out. You remember how mad my siblings were when I took my share of
our parent’s house and well we put it in the kids trust. They thought I should
have given it to them. Like Hell not after what my sister and her husband did.
I don’t ever want our kids to do that. Promise me?” she asked him wanting.
Looking at her lovingly he didn’t want to fight with her anymore. “Fine
I’ll call Brett and tell him to bring over the papers and I’ll read them over
just to make sure everything is fine. Is that ok with you?” he asked her as he
kissed her hand.
“That would be great. And I thought you would say that, so Brett is
waiting for your call.” She chuckled.
“You’re a smartass.” He told her and went to his knees and gave her a
proper kiss.
When they finally parted, “Well now that is more like it.” She smiled
and wiggled her eyes at him.
“You want to help me get dress big boy?” she asked him grinning from
ear to ear.
“You think you can handle it Babe?” he asked her as he stood grinning like a fool.
“If you can then I can.” She told him licking her lips.
He stood there now again feeling sad and she could see it. “Why don’t
you just get my clothes Honey ok?” she told him as he went to get them. She
didn’t want to push him as far as she could because he was hurting and with all
the flirting, which was fun, until he realized that if they did start something
he could hurt her or her heart could stop if she got to excited. She wanted to
scream. Scream because she wanted to make her husband feel good, but she
couldn’t.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Things were a little tense or different the rest of the day. Poor Jon
wasn’t sure now what the hell he did. All he knew was that Ellie seemed sad after
he got her dressed and settled downstairs in the den where she wanted to sit
for the morning. The Grandkids came and went but mostly were outside or played
in the playroom seeing that school had let out for summer. She didn’t want to
spend her remaining time at the Hampton’s as she had different feelings about
it. To many Celebrities coming and going and the Paps were really bad there.
She told her in-laws that they could spend some time there so they could throw
off the Paps into thinking that maybe they would show. Tony and Matt and their
families enjoyed staying there but felt a little strange this time around
seeing that Jon and Ellie weren’t spending this time together there. They knew
it would have been their last time there and thought that they would love to be
alone and spend it together. But Ellie wanted to spend her remaining time at
home with her children and grandchildren in the place that she loved more than
anything. Not the place that her family did. She never got use to the Hampton
house like they did. She had told Jon when they first met that she wasn’t a
beach person but she went anyway and had Jon slather tons of sun lotion on her,
which he loved to do. Anything so he could touch her was good for him he
thought.
She was sitting there thinking when Stef came in with some cookies and
her tea and sat down with her. “Oh thank you dear you didn’t have to do this.
Everyone waiting on me hand and foot. I feel like a Queen.” Ellie told her
second oldest.
“Well Mom you are. Is there anything else you need?” she asked her Mom.
“No, can you stay for a while thou?” her mother asked her.
“Of course. Anything specific on your mind?” Stef wanted to know.
“Your Dad, does he seem different lately?” hoping one of the kids would
know.
“Well not any more worried than usual.” She told her Mom with a slight
smile on her face.
Smiling slightly herself, “I’m sorry that I’m making you all worry about
me. That wasn’t my intention.” She told her while sipping her tea with her
cookie.
“I know Mar, we all know that. I going to say this, we know you’re
worrying about us isn’t going to help you relax or feel better so please don’t
ok?” she tried to explain to her Mom.
Looking at her questionability she said, “I’ll worry about you kids til
the day I’d… crap sorry but you know what I mean. Look we all know what ‘s
coming. What I’m most worried about is
your Dad. Yeah we’ve been together so long now and he’s just used to me being
with him. Doing things for him and stuff. Don’t get me wrong we each have our
own things but when the band disbursed, well you know, he clung to me like a baby deer does with its mother!” she emphasized
the last part with pursed lips and wide eyes as she clung to her chair.
Laughing, “I know he was so bored I think Romeo was going to up his
wedding date just so Dad would help with something, anything he was driving us
all nuts. Thank God you came up with something about that Documentary from
start to finish that took him quite a long time to do.” She said as she had a
sip of her lemonade.
“Well your Father had done small docs but never a good one where it was
from all of them and I told them to be truthful. And Boy was it. I told him not to do it if it wasn’t going to
be. And I was proud of him for that and he left one hell of a legacy for his
family to have. And the truth isn’t really that bad most of it is just sex ok
and drugs.” Ellie grinned.
“Yeah but Mom if that was us you would have killed us. I mean come back
from the dead and killed us. Meet us at the Pearly Gates kill us thing.” Stef
sat there staring at her Mom waiting for her answer before she made her comment
on them doing what her Dad and band mates really did during their music career.
Shaking her head and chuckling, “I found out a lot about your Dad when
I met him. He confided in me once he knew he could trust me. Your Grandmother
didn’t want him to ever talk about the part of his life not only because it put
her in a bad light as a Mother and Parent but she didn’t want Jon to go thru
that again.” She said staring into space.
Stef looked at her and got nervous, so she slowly knelt down in front
of her and shook her slowly. “Mar, Mar, you ok?” she asked with strong but
regular voice tone. She didn’t want to yell and scare her Mom.
Ellie came out of her trance as she blinked her eyes and looked at her
daughter. “Oh Stef I’m sorry I was just thinking of something I didn’t mean to
slip away there. I seem to be doing that more and more lately.” She said as she
straightened herself in her chair and even worried herself about drifting off
like that.
“Do you do that a lot Mom?” Steffy asked her Mom concerned.
“No not that much. I was just thinking about a few things and just got
caught up in them that’s all. Don’t worry I’m not losing it yet.” She smiled at
her daughter.
“I didn’t say that. I’m just worried right now. Are you in pain?’ she
wanted to know.
“No Sweetheart I’m not. They have me on pretty good meds right now so
don’t worry and you can tell the rest of them that too.” She told Stef smiling.
“Mom it’s ok you can tell me I can take it really?” she tried to assure
her Mom.
“Look Stef they have me on a pretty high dosage ok? It took a while but
we finally came across a good dosage that works which they couldn’t believe
that I could handle. But I have been on medications since I have been eight
years old so I can handle a lot in my old age.” She chuckled.
“Well what happens when you can’t handle it anymore?” Steffy wanted to
know.
“That’s when they put me under Honey. Into a coma so I can’t feel it
anymore and then it’s up to God.” She explained to her which she knew it hurt
her daughter but she wasn’t going to sugar coat it. They never sugar coated
anything for their children ever. Looking at her she then asked her, “Stef are
you guys going to be able to handle this? Because I know we didn’t when it was
Grandma and Grandpa. It just about killed us and well if it’s possible were
even closer than we were. And I really need you guys to be there for Daddy can
you do that for me?” she asked her as her heart ached.
“Yeah Mom you can count on us.” She told her trying not to cry.
“It’s ok to cry you know. I love each and everyone of you. You all have
been my light, my joy and don’t think not one of you weren’t wanted. Just
promise me that you all will love each other after your Father and I are gone.”
She made Steffy promise.
“Don’t worry we will. We’re all we have.” She told her Mom smiling.
“That’s all I care about then.” Ellie said happily.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stephanie later talked to the rest of her siblings and re-laid what her
Mom had said to her about what they had talked about. They more or less had got
the same speech here and there but not so in-depth. But they all agreed with
what their Mom wanted and that’s all that mattered. They would be there for
their Dad and for each other and not fight about anything. Their parents had
taken care of all financial things that had to with the estate and finances and
even with the funeral arrangements for both of them. They didn’t want the
children to have to worry about anything during their time of need. Plus the
executor of the estate would help them with anything they needed. Things didn’t
go that well for Ellie when her parents passed and she didn’t want her children
to go thru what her and her siblings did. Jon and his brothers luckily had a
smooth transition. Unfortunately Ellie’s parents passed first so they learned a
lot what not to do. The only thing Ellie regretted was that she really hasn’t
talked to anyone in her family in over Twenty years.
But she always felt that it was their loss because they were missing
out on six great nieces and nephews and after she tried to contact them and
never got a response she said the hell with them. Especially Jon who saw the
pain in her eyes when they never called her back. But now with all the news and
internet activity (yes they still have it) and the Paps running them down still
it was all over the news that Ellie Bongiovi was sick. Very Sick. And they were
staking out the house and waiting when someone would take her to doctor’s appointment’s
or the hospital or when hospice might come to the house telling them it was
soon and for that fateful day when the world would come down underneath them.
After dinner Ellie was tired but she didn’t want anyone to know it.
Otherwise they would be all over her. So she went out to the day room to sit
and read her book when she heard the telephone ring. She didn’t think anything
of it. She did chuckle thou thinking that they were probably one of the last
ones to have a home phone because she didn’t like not having a landline just in
case. Old school she thought. She heard Romeo yell for his Dad to pick up the
phone and then he was yelling for his brother Jake. She didn’t think anything
of it until she heard Jon yelling. She couldn’t quite hear what he was yelling
about but she knew he was upset about something. She knew she didn’t need this
but she also knew he wouldn’t tell her anything about it either because he
didn’t want to upset her. So it would be useless to ask him about it. Just then
Jimmy came in with a grim look on his face.
“Jimmy are you alright? Please don’t tell me someone died?” she asked
him concerned.
Shaking his head no he went to sit next to her. “No Mom no one died but
I think they might.” He told her with unexpected feelings about this.
“OK you want to tell me what’s going on. (pausing for a moment) Does
this have to do with your Father yelling?” she asked him.
“You could say that. Uncle Richie is on the
phone and I’m sure Dad will let us all know what he wants but I think we can
guess.” Jimmy said to his Mom holding her hand.
